Behavioural Production

Radiation Cull Algorithm, Single Building and City Block, Ecotect + Geco + GH

The structural print between the buildings and the volume clusters presented an opportunity to explore the potential of behavioural production in environmental design. The system hypothesis is that drones are programed to think objectively about the design, rather than simply follow a predetermined flight path based on a fixed scheme.

Once the swarm acquires all the necessary data, their print paths are determined using algorithms that optimise the structure and the material efficiency. The architects manipulate these paths based on their design intuition and aesthetic preferences, ensuring the more subjective design strategies are being met. Printing begins; however, during construction, the collective intelligence of the swarm makes live adjustments based on live performance analysis, which informs the construction team if certain parts need reinforcing. Such feedback loops between the design and construction phases could enable a more optimised and efficient outcome.
